Al-Bireh
City:
Al Bireh is an ancient
Palestinian city hat is connected to its twin city
Ramallah. The name of the city comes from the old
Canaanite name Berote which means wells. During the
Roman period it was called Beria. In the thirteenth
century it was known to be one of the centers for the
shrines knights. It was only the place for the Moslem
troops preparations against the Crusaders. It is located
to the north of Jerusalem. In 1922 its population was
around 2920, in 1967 13037, in 1987 22540 including the
refugee camp of A Amari, finally in 19 the population
reached the number of 33539. l-Bireh has many historical
sites such as Al Nasbeh which is a very old site that
goes back to the Bronze Age and the Ashtarote Shrine
In the 17th century Al-Bireh became a Moslem city and in
1099 it was occupied by the crusaders. In 1187 the
Moslem troops led by Salah Aldin entered the city.
It had an important status during the Ottoman period.
The city attracts many people who decide to reside in it
because of its weather, services and active cultural
